  Thallus pale yellow to pale tan, areolate; areolae confluent, 0.2–0.5 mm wide, 0.1–0.2 mm thick, soraliate. Soralia to 0.3 mm wide, originating at the margins of the areolae, but soon spreading over the surface; soredia farinose to granular, grey, 25–30 µm diam. Photobiont cells 9–14 µm wide. Apothecia rare, round, 0.3–0.8 mm diam., sessile; disc jet-black, glossy, plane, becoming undulate to convex; margin thin, occasionally flexuose, black and glossy, persistent, concolorous with the disc at upper edge, outer edge sometimes ±brownish. Exciple similarly coloured at outer edge, pale orange within, K–. Epihymenium 8–12 µm thick, dark orange-brown to olive-brown, K+ pale dingy greyish brown. Hymenium 32–50 µm thick, pale orange-brown to olive-brown, K–. Hypothecium 60–80 µm thick, colourless to pale orange-brown, K–; subhypothecium colourless to pale orange-brown, K–, except for a central band containing dark brown angular granules to c.8 µm wide which react K+ vivid purple. Paraphyses conglutinated, sparingly branched and anastomosing, 1–2 µm thick, regularly tapered; apices colourless, not swollen. Asci 25–40 × 9–12 µm. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal, 7.5–12.0 × 2.5–5.0 µm, usually with 1–3 plasma bridges. Pycnidia not seen.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus and subhypothecial granules, K+ purple, UV+ white; containing hypothamnolic acid.
     
  This endemic species is known only from the type locality in south-eastern N.S.W.
